Fantasy Portfolio

Fantasy Portfolio..

What makes you tick and where do you want to be in 5 years?

Students are asked to build their “fantasy portfolio” by clipping and copying photographs taken by photographers other than themselves.

The portfolio should contain a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 18 images that reflect:

a) the kind of work that first inspired them to become photographers

b) the kind of work they hope to be making in the years after they graduate

  1. the images that have always been the most formative and influential to their own style as a photographer

For this weeks task we had to create a fantasy portfolio containing images that inspire us and the type of photography we like. For this i first started thinking about the type of stuff which inspired me when i first started taking photographs. I’ve always had a strong fascination into photography which documents peoples lives, strong photographs which provoke a strong emotional response from the viewer was what always interested me the most.

Two photographers that caught my attention and whose work i still find extremely interesting are larry clark and jim Goldberg, they inspired me a lot when i first started my college photography corse. The way they documented such fragile and touchy subjects and managed to portray such gritty and emotional photographs really caught my attention. The thing which i like the most was they gave you a view into someones completely different life.

As i progressed more in photography i got a lot more interested in photographers who photographed their own lives and a lot more interested in the human form. i started looking into photographers like  Nan Goldin and Elinor Curruci.

Once again i think the draw to these photographs for me is the emotion captured in them.

Ellinor Carucci

What i love about this photograph is the movement captured in it, it solidifies the fact that its real and not just staged, its like a window into their own lives.

Francesca woodman is a photographer who i discovered while i have been at university whose work really captured my attention. She mainly created self nudes which were surreal, gothic and ghost like. Her photographs aren’t your usual self portraits, taken in old abandoned buildings, often hiding parts of her body through objects or movement they portray a sense of loneliness and of feeling lost. However these photographs she produced provide a look into her own identity and really provoke emotions in the viewer whether these are bad one or good.
